Your carpet can take a beating. Between kids, pets, and normal foot traffic, the carpets in your home can begin to quickly collect dirt and germs. But how often should your carpet actually be cleaned?

Self-Cleaning

When we think of cleaning carpets, there are many things to consider. A large part of cleaning your carpet includes the regular steps you can easily do yourself.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming is an easy and beneficial practice that you can do frequently to keep your carpets in great shape. You should vacuum your carpets at least once a week to keep them at their best and ensure longevity. Regular vacuuming ensures that dirt and loose particles don’t soak into your carpet; this also means you’ll need fewer professional cleanings!

If you or anyone in your home suffers from allergies, weekly vacuuming will also reduce allergens caused by pets, pollen, and more. A vacuum cleaner with a small-particle or high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is recommended.

Cleaning Up After Kids and Pets

When you have children and pets, it’s almost a given that your carpets will see spills and accidents. Spot cleaning spills as soon as they happen prevents staining and stops particles from soaking in deeper. Be sure to blot any spots on your carpet—don’t rub them! This could also cause the stain to seep deeper into your carpet, and can also damage the carpet fibers.

Should you DIY?

While you can DIY wet clean your carpets to get a cleaning that’s close to professional, it’s not recommended. There are many risks that you take with this method, such as over-shampooing, over-wetting, and the possibility of furniture staining your wet carpet. In addition, you may end up spending more money on a machine and still not getting as deep of a clean as a professional service.

Professional Cleaning

A professional carpet cleaning gets deep into your carpets to ensure the best hygiene as well as longevity for your carpets. Professional cleaners have the equipment and experience needed to extend the life of your carpet.

For the best results, get your carpets professionally cleaned once every 6 months. If there are children or pets in your home, this could be needed more frequently. Additionally, light-colored carpets in your home may need to be cleaned more often to get rid of more visible wear and tear.

You should also check the warranty on your carpet. Most warranties come with a requirement for a professional carpet cleaning at least once a year.

Your carpets are important and should be cared for properly. Frequently cleaning your carpets will extend their lifespan and keep your home healthy and fresh. For more carpet cleaning tips, subscribe to our blog!
